At the young age of 14, he found work as a theater organist playing to silent films and as a church choirmaster during Sunday services. Fax studied music at Syracuse University, Eastman School of Music, and New York University. Taking a teaching position at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, he became the founder of the music department. Fax went on to teach at Black Mountain College before teaching at Howard University where he taught composers Dorothy Rudd Moore and Adolphus Hailstork. Fax’s catalogue is comprised of music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, voice, organ, piano, and includes two operas. Born in New Castle, Delaware, she became interested in composition at a young age and began piano lessons as well as taking on the clarinet. Moore continued her studies at Howard University where she studied composition with Mark Fax. After graduating in 1963, she received the Lucy Moten Fellowship to study in France. Moore is a distinguished educator having taught voice and piano at the Harlem School of the Arts, New York University, and Bronx Community College. Born in Rochester, NY, he went on to study composition at Howard University with Mark Fax, Manhattan School of Music with Vittorio Giannini and David Diamond, and received his doctorate from Michigan State University under H. Owen Reed. His work, which has been performed by the Detroit Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony among others, blends stylistic practices of the African American spiritual and Western classical music.
