Adolphus Hailstork

Adolphus Hailstork (b. 1941) has written works for chorus, organ, chamber ensembles, band, and orchestra. Born in Rochester, NY, he went on to study composition at Howard University with Mark Fax, Manhattan School of Music with Vittorio Giannini and David Diamond, and received his doctorate from Michigan State University under H. Owen Reed. His work, which has been performed by the Detroit Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony among others, blends stylistic practices of the African American spiritual and Western classical music. Professor Hailstork has taught at Youngstown State University, Norfolk State University, and currently lives in Virginia where he teaches at Old Dominion University.
